Riders Like You 2000

Our Y2K Road Test Lineup

"Riders Like You," our road testing program for the new Y2K gruppos, represented our our most ambitious testing program yet!  We selected four riders from dozens of applicants to ride and comment on Campagnolo's top four gruppos: Record®, Chorus®, Daytona®, and Veloce®.  These riders--our Test Team--sent in reports every three months on how the equipment is performing, what they like, and what they don't.

We call our testing program "Riders Like You" because the testing features real riders, on real bikes, under real conditions much like those you would face.  Our road testing program is directed by our ace Tech guy, Tim Laflin, but the comments are those of the riders.

Riders Like You™ 2000 is Sponsored by Branford Bike and Habanero Cycles

Previously Equipped bike: Record 9sp Independent Fabrications.
Type of riding: Racing and training. Cat 3 racer on local USCF. A roleur if you will (ie.
fast enough to be in the break but not quick enough to win the sprint)
Biography
"I am a 26 year old Category 3 racer from Central Virginia. The rides around here are typically rolling with everything from short steep climbs to 3-6 mile climbs in the Blue Ridge. Most of my 8-10,000 miles a year is spent training for as many races as my wife will allow mostly road races and criteriums. Once the winter kicks in, this bike will be used primarily indoors for marathon sessions on my trainer. Last year I raced on an Independent Fabrications with Campy 9sp and Speedplay pedals. With this bike I am making the switch to campy pedals, 10sp and titanium. Unfortunately I am much too fast to get a picture of on my road bike so one of me on my mountain bike will have to do."

John's Test BikePreviously Equipped bike
I have a Norco mountain bike.  The Waterford currently has a mix of 98 CHORUS and Racing triple components.  The Waterford is the bike I plan on equipping with 2000 CHORUS.  The Torpado is full CAMPY as well of course. So far the mountain bike is only equipped with a CAMPAGNOLO seat quick release, but I am working on  it. (John's bike is shown in the photo at left)
Type of riding:  Commuting, group rides, solo rides, weekend tour
Biography:  "Hello. I am John and I will be road testing the CHORUS 2000 gruppo. Presently I live in Hawaii on the big island  of Hawaii which is next
to Maui. I have been riding for about 23 years.  Ever since I discovered it was a way I could get out of the house while everyone else was watching football.  I ride from 150 to 175 mi per week.  I enjoy all types of riding.  I commute to work at least 4 times a week, go on group rides, do solo rides, and an occasional weekend tour.   I am also thinking of trying a little masters racing this year too.  That's about it as soon as I set up the bike I will start putting some miles on and giving a update.  If the 2000 CHORUS is anything like the 98 then I know it will perform flawlessly.  See ya Later remember to promote the benefits of CAMPY wherever you ride."

Daytona
Testing the all-new Daytona® gruppo is Stuart Passmore of Australia.

Stats/Info:
Name: Stuart Passmore
Age: 24
Height: 175 cm or 5' 8"
Weight: 154
Miles Per Year: 10 - 15,000
Location:  Western Australia
Terrain:  Sealed roads / cycle paths, mainly flat, some hills.
Previously Equipped bike:  Shimano Dura Ace (9s and 8s), Ultegra (9s and 8s), shimano 105 (8s), Campagnolo Record (99 9s), chorus 97 9s
Type of riding:  Racing A grade, training, Commuting, some MTB
Biography:  "I am going to build the groupset on a Bianchi Neuron Frame and fork, 55cm c-t, use cxp30 rims, sapim spokes, A/C seatpost, saddle, bars and stem still to be decided.  I will use this for commuting and all smaller
races.  My daily commute composes most of my training and is usually 2h/day.  I have missed about 10 days of my commute in the last year, so I ride in most of the weather.  I have another aluminium frame and carbon fork built with campag record 99 9s which I will use for the big races etc - so it probably wont get used much now!!! I race every weekend in summer and some weeks in winter.  I will be racing a special criterium series here in perth featuring some of the best riders in Australia and overseas (see http://www.perthcriterium.com) at the end of november. My year goes up and down a fair bit, summer I get pretty fit, winter I just go into damage control, but I still try to ride 4 days out of 7 in winter and 6 out of 7 in summer."

Veloce
Justin Dodd Testing the Veloce® gruppo is Justin Dodd of New Jersey.

Stats/Info:
Name: Justin Dodd
Age: 19
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 170
Miles Per Year:  I lost track after my computer broke, but I ride about 2 hours, four times a week
Location:  Southern New Jersey
Terrain you ride: Jersey is pretty flat but I ride my bike in Valley Forge a lot and there are some pretty good sized climbs
Previously Equipped bike:  Cannondale CAD3 with 8spd Chorus
Type of riding:  I ride mainly just for the fun of it.  I'm thinking of doing
a few road races this spring and maybe a triathalon.  I used to use my bike to commute until I got a car, but I still try to use it for getting around as much as possible.
Biography:  "I'm still using the CAD3 frame with a carbon fork because it fits me perfectly, but I'm replacing my old parts with Campy Veloce.  There's nothing else really
exciting about the bike I'm building up, its just going to be a good quality ride, which is exactly what I've been looking for.  Oh I forgot one thing, I'm putting my Specialized Body Geometry seat on the bike ( no I don't have that problem, just in case you were wondering). Justin's Bike It may weigh as much as a couch but it feels like one too so I figure its a fair trade off. I have been obsessed with riding bikes since I was six.  At first I was only into mountain biking (I know it may be painful for some to hear), but after I went to the Corestates race in Philly three years ago, I've been hooked on road bikes ever since.   I must admit that I still love mountain biking as much as ever, but the speed and efficiency of a road bike is just something you can't recreate with a mountain bike."
