Shimano knows this too, but it doesn't matter to them. They continue to produce expensive garbage that fails whenever it gets a little dirty. Oh well, what are ya gonna do... I was there at the Knoxville double 2001 when you were inducted to the hall of fame. That was #6 of 7 doubles for me that year and my first CTC achievement.I started riding in the spring of '99 with the Sacramento Leukemia team coached by Rob Kopitzke of Body Concepts. Up until then I was the informal couch potato. Never an athlete in any sense of the word. Needless to say,I found my niche in cycling! But alas, life is about change... I moved to the Oregon Coast in the fall of 2002 and have let go what has been such an important part of my life. Yes, I rode the STP last year along with a few other centuries but this winter has been dismal. I was spoiled by the California weather and am having a hard time getting motivated to stay in shape. But you know what? I'm not going to give up! Just like those doubles Keep going it's worth it! Thanks for your website and the encouraging words and photos. See you on the road!! Name: MARK WARE Messageexcellent coverage, information contacts etc. Name: MARK WARE Messageexcellent coverage, information contacts etc. Name: Ace MessageOK Name: SteveC MessageQUESTION ON CAMPY GRUPPO RETRO-FIT: I have always wanted a road bike with Campy components. I recently got a good deal on a Bianchi Campione D'italia (circa 1993). The Bianchi has an Italian made 7-sp gruppo called Quattro (I thought was Italian, but the freewheel says Shimano...UGH). I would like to replace with Campy, but the new 9 or 10 sp gruppos require a complete change over including new wheels, which is out of my price range for the present time. So I am asking the "Campy experts" for recommendations to make this Italian bike completely Italian. Would an early 90's 7 or 8 speed Campy gruppo make sense? I would like ergo levers, but am also used to bar end shifters. I guess I could just leave it, but it's a shame for a Bianchi to not have campy. Help! Thanks, SteveC Name: larry singleton Messagework orders Name: Dave Sutton MessageIs it too cheeky to ask how and where you purchased your frame also very importantly how much did it cost. Just got back into biking after 20 years. I awoke to sheer ugliness. WHAT HAPPENED to beautiful Lugged Frames? I bought a bike of course. Came with Shimino. Could not find a single bike with Campy. My new bike is all Cromo Steel with traditional styling but no LUGs. Little by little, Im replacing all components with Campy, Chorus to start with and RETRO where appropriate. Crank, break calipers and derailer are Chorus. Took off the super-ugly Shimino SORO STI break system. Calipers replaced with Chorus. Converted to Down-Tube Shifting and they look great and work just fine too. NOW.. This is the great part..... I was able to find a pair, 80s vintage Super Record Brake Levers with gum hoods, Campy Shield Logo and I have them on order from Switzerland. My bike is going to be Retro/Modern I guess. Now one last comment: What was wrong with threaded headsets? I hate the new stems of today. They are God Awful UGLY!!!! Just one more thing Ive I have to convert. You can disagree with me, I dont care but the new bikes of today are UGLY, UGLY, UGLY! 1. AT LEAST: Bring back beautiful Lugged Steel Frames. If you want less weight, EAT LESS PIZZA! 2. FOR SURE: bring back Threaded Headsets and beautiful ADJUSTABLE quill stems. 3. Bring back the stylish beauty of the old Campy hubs. 4. Bring back 5,6, and 7 speed Freewheels. You dont need 3 million gears! Are you a Truck? 5. Bring back down-tube shifting. A Mans manual shift! Mostly, they look better! 6. Bring back French Cotton Tape and Velox Plugs! Name: vandana Messagei want to see boucher for address book Name: James Brown Messagegood site Name: Matt Cahill MessageIt's really great to find this site! Stopped riding 24 years ago, before college. And, despite the longing to get back on my vintage, beloved Raliegh International, all Campy equipped, both time and bicyle were missing in action. No more excuses! On 77th Street today, buried under another bicycle outside a 'second-hand' antique shop lay a beat-up looking Pinarello! Closer inspection revealed a few tell-tale signs of abuse. The paint was a bit mussed up and the logos were badly chipped away . The crome front fork was surely a replacement, and the Shamano front wheel and Matrix rim a dead give-away that the bike had been in a wreck. I carefully examined the lugs attaching the front collar tube and was relieved to find there were no tears or bumps in the metal of the tubes. The alingment of the frame seemed perfect and both the wheels were in good true. The bike appeared to be very well maintained. Obviously, the cables had all been replaced, but the manchanic who worked on it had carefully put crimping sleeves over the exposed ends so they would not fray. What an all-orignal Campy retro find! I buzzed on the shop door and just inside the door I called down the junk filled, dimly lit store, "How much do you want for the "Professional" bike outside?" He looked around his customer and he said, "$200," and added, "make me an offer." I paused for a New York moment and said " How about $175?" "Cash?" "Yeah," I said, "but I have to go the bank..." The rest, as they say, is history. Riding through a cold Central Park, I just fell in love with this beautifully, precision crafted machine. What awesome luck! The confidence you gain as a cyclist having this kind of solid and respsonsive hardware beneath you is a nameless transport to joy. My butt is going to be so sore tomorrow! Name: Simon Coates MessageInteresting site! I have been riding since 1993 and in that time Shimano have gradually taken over. Dura-Ace is slicker, works better and is flawless in every detail; Record, on the other hand, have been left behind. Shimano DA was the first 9-speed group, and Record 9 was rushed - it is the only chain I have ever used that failed. Just look at the finish! A Record crank from 1992 has a better finsh today than a new one in the shops. It is a shame. The 'new' Record carbon crank? I've been riding one (Zipp) for over two years!!! Name: Michael W. All the Shimano people that come on this site and write about their detest must just be jealous that the love affair between them and the components isn't as strong as it is with those who ride the worlds greatest cycling components, CAMPAGNOLO. They just don't understand, and probably never will. Name: Dennis P. Grove Messageimpressed!!! Name: Achim MessageHey everybody out there! It seems to me that Campy Only is trying to tell you, that the strength and quality of a biker (not only professionals, even amateurs!) depends on the equipment of the bike. Believe me: It does not matter if your bike is i.e.9-speed Shimano Dura Ace-equipped or 10-speed Campy Record-equipped!!! This is absolutely ridicolous. Tour de France 2001 showed this in a dramatic way. By the way: my bike is Campy 10-speed equipped (chorus). It's amazing... I check out the rumours section every week. Unfortunately, your latest rumour has a bit of an error. You state the new group to come out next year, positioned under Mirage, will be called Xenon, named after an off-road group from the 90s. Xenon was actually a road group. It was never very popular because of it's painted finish. I guess it reminded too many people of (Gasp!) Shimano Sante. Except for this little gripe, GREAT SITE! Please keep up the good work. Name: William Brock MessageThe way I see it, all important design and engineering breakthroughs happened more than 20 years ago -- so I ride Nuovo Record most of the time and Super Record on special occasions. My daily rider is a NR-equipped Legnano from the early 70s and my Sunday bike is a custom-made frame from a small Italian builder named BERMA (Mario Bertocco.) Keep 'em turning! Name: Bryan MessageI have a 1994 Giuseppe Olmo bike with Campagnolo Record components. Everything works like a dream (still!), except the brakes, which are a bit spongy. That can be adjusted of course, but after a day or two they become spongy again. But that's logical, because the brakes are Shimano 600. (Don't ask me why, I bought the bike second hand!) Name: Dave Whitney MessageGreat site. I ride a Cannondale frame (R-800 ?) that a former pro racer gave me that I built up with all used Record 8-speed stuff. Name: Rob Krieg MessageThinking about visiting my 1973 Schwinn Paramount that has been neglected in my garage for 14 years. Hasn't been riden since the 1984 RAGBRAI (50 lbs ago). All Campy. I'm afraid I'll crush the Reynolds 531 frame if I get on the saddle. I doubt that the paramount design planned for a 230 lb rider. Ouch. Name: gaetano magno Messagegreat site keep it rolling, and congrats on 100 years. Name: Adam J. Owens MessageSuper site! I've been away from cycling for a long time - too long in fact. My daughter's 9th birthday is coming up on June 22 and I decided to get her a new bike to use when she's with me (divorce) and along the way I got to thinking it's about time I picked one up for myself. I used to have a Mossberg (anyone remember those?) back in the 1970's that I rode constantly. This was one of the good ones when they were still built by the shotgun company before they sold the bicycle business off. I continued hot-rodding it with Dura-Ace and Campy Record parts (couldn't afford a full Campy set-up back then) until I'd built myself a pretty good road machine. I once managed to do 8 miles in 18 minutes on that bike. Got some strange looks from drivers when I'd pass their cars! Some lowlife stole it out of my garage in the winter of 1983 and I never replaced it until now. I just picked myself up a De Bernardi Aelle (in Ferrari Red) with a full Campy Mirage gruppo. Things have changed! 27 gears and those Ergo shifters, took me a little bit of ground school to figure it all out - I still want to reach for the downtube to shift but I'll get it. The rest is still traditional - lugged steel frame, pedals with toe clips as I haven't warmed up to the idea of those new shoes (at least not yet). Did a 5 mile ride before breakfast this morning - yeah, wimpy distance I know but I've got a bit of work to do to get myself back into shape yet. The bike is smooth, swift and elegant. There really is a soulful, mechanical beauty in the Campagnolo line - similar to that of a Jaguar XK or an M-series Leica - that transcends mere functionality. It is good to be back! A.J. Owens Name: Chris McGranahan MessageLike your site. I ride a Medici with 50th groupo. Name: John E MessageThis year, my birthday (26 Aug) will be special! My bikes include a 1982 mostly-Campy Bianchi and a full-Reynolds 531 ca. 1960 Capo (www.capo.at), which came with record hubs and Gran Sport derailleurs. The frames are near opposite poles of the stiffness spectrum, but I greatly enjoy each one. Safety tip: use KoolStop pads to compensate for the poor leverage provided by those old Campy brake calipers. Name: Mohammed Kamal Message''Blues Is My Middle Name'' Ray Charles Name: J. Fazio MessageEnjoyed my visit to your fantastic Campy site! I see you have been on the internet for many years. Hope to see you in the years to come. Name: Ed Brown MessageOK, I have to admit to a case of freewheel envy. However, one of my best memories is during a climb in a race, blowing by a guy who was all duded out with disk wheels on a $3,000 bike, when I was riding a $300 bike with (gasp)Suntour components. While I can't speak for all the studs out there, pushing a 52/13 on the flat is beyond my ability to sustain for long. On a downhill, I can go faster in a nice tight tuck. The complete package is rider AND bike, and the rider part is probably 90+% of the package. Is the 14 speed freewheel a typo ? Maybe someone should develop a 13-1/2 tooth cog. That would fill a serious ratio gap. I am sure that the same controversy stewed when they went from 5 to 6 speed freewheels. (I can remember 5 speeds) How is the durability of the 9/10 speeds? Is wheel dish/strength an issue? Maybe an 11/12 would be useful with a 45/35 in the front, and an 11-20 straight block in the back, and then you'd still have your climbing gears. Sorry for the long message, but I'm a crotchety old fart. Name: Sean Chapman MessageWhy all the Shimano bashing, guys? They make excellent MTB components. Also, without their continued presence in the road market what would you compare new Campag offering too? Also, I don't think you should be knocking the 14-speed cassette until you've tried it. Only a few short years ago everyone scoffed at the idea of a nine-speed..... Name: Dave Butler MessageGreat campy site I have just bought a new bike with a Mirage 9 speed. Aiming to be #290,000. Still ride a SR equipped 1985 Trek 770 (7 speed) as an everyday bike. I still slow it down more than it slows me down. Name: Tere Camacho Perez MessageJust wanted to say, "Hi," and hope that one day I'll be able to afford to ride a campy 10! C-ya! Name: Bernie Scott MessageWhen I was a teenager in the 70's I always wanted a Campy equiped bike but couldn't afford one. Recently I picked up a brand new Trek 2200 for a song. It had sat in the corner of the showroom for six years and had dust on it. It has carbon tubes glued to aluminum lugs. Dark blue and black - very pretty. It has an 8 speed Veloche groupo on it. The dealer told me that all his customers wanted was Shimano. He was desperate to get rid of it. Amazing how foolish people can be. What a nice bike. I love the Veloche groupo. It was stiff at first but now that it is broken in it works great. I can imagine how smooth a newer 10 speed groupo is. Your site is fantastic. It is a lifeline to people desperate for accurate Campy info. It is difficult to find bike shops that carry Campy anymore much less have useful knowledge of it. Campy may be expensive and it can be difficult at times to track down what you need. But the end results is worth it. Once you've tried Campy you won't go back. I still own my 2 Phydeaux's dating back to 1978 and 1980 (Built by Marc Muller - the designer and co-owner of Waterford Precision Cycles). The older bike, a road bike, is a combo of Record and Super Record. The second bike is a time trial design by Marc and is believed to be the last Phydeaux ever built (actually completed in the Waterford factory). It has never had a component set installed on it! It's great to see the avid support of the line. Good luck to all Jim Housh

I've just put me and my Chorus-'99 equiped Pinarello Stelvio through 17 days of "classic" territory: Alpe d'Huez, Ventoux, Aigoual, Portet d'Aspet (made sure not to miss any corners like poor Fabio Casartelli), Mente, Aspin and Tourmalet (among many others). My previous trips were done with S-word 105 stuff; as you'd expect me to write, Chorus did the job very well; but it did take a little getting used to the brakes during descents. Initially they seemed a bit "dead"; but as soon as you REALLY squeeze the levers, they DO slow you down indeed. I've just put six hours of work in checking, adjusting and cleaning my black beauty and couldn't find any defects apart from a slightly "sticky" headset. that one's got to go anyway; a shame Campa doesn't use needle-bearings.
