Daytona Part 3

Road tester Stuart Passmore sends his latest installment in his review of Daytona:

Just a few extra comments after my last (2nd) review.

I have noticed that the chain and drivetrain getting increasingly noisy over the last month. It was annoying the heck out of me, the chain was clean but I just couldnt suss it out. Turned out, I just gave it some extra oil and all is well. I have found that a heavier oil is better for the campy drive train as it seems to muffle any noises. Light oil is smooth, but the drive trains still makes a bit of a ticking noise.

Also noticed that the cleats are starting to squeak in the pedals. They are about half worn out (give or take), so this might be the reason. A regular clean with a rag (once a week), keeps this at bay.

Tim Laflin Comments: Most riders have mentioned that the cleats ware quickly due to the small amount of plastic used in the cleat. There have also been some suggestions that the cleats are too flexible which is causing entry and exit problems. The only sure thing is that most riders have lots of problems or none at all. We hope Campy is listening to the riders.

Upgrades

If I had the chance, the first thing I would upgrade would be the bottom bracket (anything), shifter/brake levers (record), followed by the cranks (record for sure - aesthetically nothing better). Then hubs (record/chorus). I think the rest of the gruppo is fine. Actually the whole gruppo is fine - but this is a wish list type of approach.

Emails

I really haven't had any emails, other than that guy hassling me saying the review didn't go into enough technical detail. Actually, I get a few emails asking if Daytona is better than Ultegra/105. I always say, EXCEPT for the b/b and crank combo, the Daytona gruppo is a much better value gruppo than 105 or Ultegra. Particularly in NZ, where the Daytona gruppo is cheaper. Perhaps not as light, but it performs smoother, and has a better finish, especially in the shifters. The only case where this isn't true, is the B/B. Ultegra is a better B/B and crank combo IN MY OPINION. Daytona wins in everywhere else though.
