Road tester John Stevens checks in
from sunny and hot Hawaii with this latest installment:
Hello everyone well summer is in full swing here in Hawaii which means it's
hotter and on the big Island it rains real hard then goes away. I have not
been able to put as many miles on the the Group as I was hoping, being in
the Coast Guard we are gone sometimes and that cuts into my riding time.
It's the usual case of work getting in the way of having fun. Anyway I have over 2000 miles on the Group and am finding a few things out so here
they are.
1. The shifting is not as perfect as out of the
box
I have had to adjust the cable tension but that is to be expected. But it still makes noise like it wants to go up or down a cog. If any of you
out there remember friction shifting it is just a matter of putting a little tension on the shift lever and the noise goes away. I
believe the chain is wearing out and starting to cause my shifting to become loose.
2. The chain
When I first put the chain on I put it in the 53x12 and pulled the chain
away from the forward part of the chain ring and could not expose the chain
ring tooth now at mile 2,200 3/4 of a chain ring tooth is showing.
3. The pedals
The pedals are still hard to get in and out of even after using tri-flow
about every couple hundred of miles or so. also the view window fell out
of the left pedal. These pedals are actually '99' pedals and had some miles
on them already.
That's it for the bad, overall I am very pleased with the 10 speed Chorus
group. I have been riding in all kinds of conditions including rain, and a
bit more rain, and during my commute the roads are pretty dirty in the rain.
I have been cleaning the bike and all the parts with a mild soap and water
then re-lubing everything with tri-flow. I have done a couple more races and
some hill climb time trials and everything is performing great Iam sure with
a new chain and perhaps a new rear shift cable the shifting will be spot on.
Remember to have fun riding and promote CAMPAGNOLO
wherever you go.
