| webmaster@campyonly.com second report on the 2001 Veloce gruppo: In the first test report, there was a compatibility item between the 13-26 cassette and the bicycle frame. When the chain is on, 1st position cog, 13, and on the large chainring, the chain would rub slightly against the frame. The frame was made back in 1996-97, and 8-speed was the dominant component at that time. This would not be a problem with current frameset and components. Thus, another set of cogs was purchased, 12-23; and, a custom set was put together, so the 26, 9th position cog could remain on the bike. There was a slight hiccup between 4th and 5th position, but it is not noticeable on the road. All is fine. Extra cogs are saved as spare parts. On the road, with the 26-49, cog and chainring, combination, there would be a familiar sound. It sounded like the chain is rubbing against the front derailleur. Later, on the repair stand, when it was checked, it was not the front derailleur. So far the source of the noise has not been found…yet. When the bike is on the road, 26 is not used that much. Since the subject is around noise, the rear hub is not silent. The noise is loud in a quiet room, but out on the road, it is barely noticeable, and somewhat pleasant. This is a weird affectionate observation. The Ergo levers are quite nice now. This personal favorite deserves to be mention and not analyzed…too much. There are just one curiosity regarding the setup of the left lever. How would one set up the front derailleur's high and low index setting since the lever is design for three speed also? Meaning, when it is not in a three speed front setup, how is it done? Currently, the front derailleur is setup by conventional method, but may be someone could add some more tech info. The hubs were checked after the first 20 miles of ride, and they have remained smooth, and have not come loose. There are no other distractions, and that is the way the bike supposes to work. More info on parts wears in the next report. |
