Record, Part 3

May 23, 2001:  Frank Pabian checks in with the latest on his continuing road test . . .

I just received my 2001 Record Pro-fit "Plus" pedals. They are far better in appearance and finish (polished aluminum versus "scratch-off" silver paint) than my 1999 Record Pro-fits. I expect to install them soon and try them out, so if there are more than just cosmetic differences, I'll let you know.

I also received the new C-10 chain. Your earlier reports were correct, the 2001 chain was in it's original plastic bag with no oil in the bag as was the case for the two previously purchased 2000 C-10 chains. The chain definitely has a Teflon feel so it seems to be and improvement that anyone can appreciate. Interestingly, the accompanying directions recommend frequent oiling of the chain as with any other chain.

I also received the Daytona 10-speed cogset cluster (11-23) and removed the skipping 11-16 chrome-steel cogs (6) from my Record Ti-Steel 11-23 cogset. I rode it today on my usual 25 mile loop with 2000 feet of climbing riding as hard as I could in all gears (with a group of local hammerheads). No problem with skipping on the new cogs, although I still have a skip on the 17 tooth Ti that I hoped I wouldn't have to replace. I'll put the Daytona Steel replacement cog in that slot. Overall the Daytona cluster is very good quality and has all of the Record shifting features (the difference might be only a few grams in more weight than the Record for the same 11-16 steel cogs).

That's it for now.
Ciao,
Frank
