For 2001, we offer our first test of
Campagnolo's "Pista" (or "track") gruppo.
Rider webmaster@campyonly.com has built up a
new track bike with the latest "off road" parts from
Campagnolo, and sends this first report:
Greetings from the track! I am the untill-now silent track group tester. I've been sidelined with a recent knee sugery but am on the road to recovery and have my first Campy Pista update.
For this season I built up a Dean steel track frame with the Record-Pista group. The only irregular choices I made were in going with a 1 1/8 threadless headset and an "old school" (noncartridge) bottom bracket. Gotta say that apart from a headset that took a while to break in (sticky for about a month) the Pista group has been flawless. I ride
Record 10 on the road and the track group is right on par!
I'm a sprinter so stiffness is at a premium - no flex at all in the cranks and BB. Hubs have the legendary Campy smoothness. Only complaint is that the rear hub is only threaded on one side (all other brands are two sided so you can put a cog on both sides and simply flip the wheel to change gears). A minor complaint though.
However I did run across a very disturbing report on the track hubs: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/record-track.html
Although I have had no problems this incident makes me a little nervous. At least everyone out there should know that riding a Campy track hub on the road VOIDS THE WARRANTY.

Rumors page, which includes a response from Branford Bike's Tim
Brockett on the longevity of Campy's road hubs.)
