Q: While
at my LBS in Miami last week, someone ordered some Campy 9-speed
replacement parts. The store owner called three Campy distributors and
all of them told him 9-speed parts were no longer being manufactured,
that all production capacity was for the new 10-speed gruppo. Is this
true?
C-O: From what I know it is NOT true since there are only
2 10 speed groups, all of the rest are 9 speed. It is probably true that
they are working on getting the 10 speed parts out first and it is also
possibly true that the distributor is not ordering 9 speed components.
Campagnolo's Official Response (From Campy
USA's Dan Mayer): As with 8 speed, I am sure 9 speed some day
will be obsolete as well. There is a point when every manufacturer has
to stop producing certain products. Much like the auto industry or just
about anything else made in a factory, an improved or better product
will always win out over the old. Keep in mind, there is still 8 speed
cassettes in the 2000 line up. Whether or not the distributors have
ordered or will stock any is a different story. If more consumers go
into shops and tell the dealers to get on the distributors about
stocking certain products, then they will be able to get what they need.
Q: My local frame builder has
informed me that the new 10 speed transmissions work with the 9 speed
chain rings and front gear mech, provided the remaining 10 speed
components are bought. Is this the case?
C-O: The chain will
probably fit on the cogs but since it is wider than the 10 speed version
the sideplates and links will probably hang up on other cogs. If it was
to work perfectly they would have used the 9 speed chain.
Q: I have the
new Chorus 10 speed and love it. My other bike has the racing
triple. Is there some way I can use the 29 tooth cog on the 9
speed racing triple?
C-O: If I remember correctly it is the same spline but the
cogs are machined more for the 10 speed, it won't work right. That other
main problem is that the EXA Drive system will not line up correctly
since it doesn't go in that range.
Q: The move to 10 speed has
somewhat unsettled me as, although Campy has 9 speed at the moment, are
they going to ditch it next year in favor of 10 speed exclusively?
Should I delay the move until (hopefully) all becomes clear?
C-O: From everything I have seen they will be keeping the
9 speed systems for a couple of years now ( I hope ). Since the 10 speed
is an " option " and the 9 speed Record and Chorus groups are
still being produced I figure they will be around for a little bit.
Q: Do you know if Campagnolo
has plans to make a 50 x 39 chainring for the 10 speed gruppo?
C-O: To my knowledge Campagnolo has not made a specific 50
tooth chainring for the ten speed as of yet. I haven't heard if this
will be produced. If I hear anything I will let you know.
Q: I'm planning
on purchasing a record 10 speed group but have some concerns about the
new chain and it's perma link. i remove my chain every few weeks
for cleaning. what kind of problems does the new design pose?
The faq's on Campy's site talk around this situation without really
answering it.
C-O: The Perma-Link system requires you to replace the
link with easy removal. The recommendation was to have a maximum of 3
links in a chain. This may prove a problem for you if you remove the
chain alot. It is also recommended that when cleaning the chain ( both
the 9 and 10 speed ) not to use a strong solvent that will remove all
lubrication, this will remove everything from inside the rollers. It is
suggested to use something that will clean but keep some of the lube
inside, this is why they suggest kerosene.
