online: Click

display were the new V-brake style calipers to go with the recently
introduced "flat bar" controls--the basic ingredients of
an all-Campy mountain bike are once more in place ...
|
 | October 3, 2005--Component
maker Full Speed Ahead
is still looking to overtake Campagnolo's #2 spot. Rumor has it that
FSA is working on a complete 11-speed gruppo that will expand their
offerings from cranks, wheels, handlebars, etc., to include
derailleurs, levers, and brakes. We've used FSA's cranksets and bars
like them--let's see how the new gruppo looks ... |
 | October 3, 2005--Coming
soon to Campy Only: Photos from Interbike, the big US cycling
trade show. We've heard so far that Campy's people were ...
less than friendly. Their booth also kept all the parts behind
glass. Over at the ShimaNO booth, you could touch and feel all
the new stuff. |

|
 | September 19, 2005--More
rumors floating out there about the potential release of a 12-speed
system by ShimaNO, and the inevitable speculation about whether
Campagnolo will follow (or try to beat them to it). Campy Only
asks once again, "When will this madness end?"
Really, folks, you don't need 12 cogs! Or even 10 ... |
 | September
16, 2005--A friend spotted this photo of Dennis Bean Larson,

|
 | September 2, 2005--Campagnolo's
official web site (www.campagnolo.com) has been updated with
news about the 2006 product line. The only
"news" that we haven't published yet is about the return
of cantilever brakes. Cantis, which disappeared from
Campagnolo's lineup with the demise of their off-road gruppos in the
1990s, will be offered in Veloce and Mirage trim for 2006. Add
them to Campy's "flat bar" controls, a triple crank, and a
long-cage rear derailleur, and you have the basic building blocks
for a Campy-equipped mountain bike ... The brakes are "linear
pull" (think V-brakes). Like other V-brakes, they also
include a built-in quick release, which kind of answers the question
we posed on August 13 (see below) about the lack of a quick release
in the flat bar levers ...
There are a few more goodies coming to a bike shop near you,
including a new bottle with a conical shape (that looks like a lot
of other bottles we've seen), a new under-bottom-bracket cable
guide, and slightly lighter entry-level brakes in the Xenon and
Mirage lines. |

|
 | August 29, 2005--Overheard
in an Orange County, California, bike shop: "Shimano front
derailleurs work better than Campagnolo. Campagnolo's rear
derailleurs work great, but they've fallen behind in front
derailleurs." Sorry to say, we've heard similar
complaints from other mechanics, who have gone as far as mounting
ShimaNO front derailleurs on otherwise all-Campy systems ... |

 | August 16, 2005--Anyone
who would like to road test a prototype system to turn a Campy
9/10-speed bicycle into a single-speed is invited to contact Eric
Hassett.
You need to have a set of Campy wheels, a standard road frame (not a
track frame) with horizontal dropouts, and a smattering of
mechanical ability. Eric will fill you in with the details. |
 | August
13, 2005--A reader who is using Campagnolo's new "flat
bar" controls points out a flaw that makes one wonder
"what were they thinking?": There is no
quick-release on the levers to open the brakes and make it easier to
install and remove the wheels. Modern Campagnolo brake
calipers (the brakes themselves) don't have quick-releases on them,
so Campagnolo puts them on the brake levers. On Ergo levers, it's
that little pin that you push to one side. Campagnolo's answer
to the flat bar lever dilemma is that you are supposed to use the
brake adjusting barrel and use it to open the brakes. That's
just dumb--it's slow, and makes it a "not quick" release.

7, 2005--One of the coolest new gadgets we've seen in a while is
a small lock from Master, the "Pit Stop." It's
about the size and weight of a tiny cel phone, includes a thin,
2-foot-long cable that retracts into the lock, and uses a 3-number
combination lock that you can set yourself. No, it won't stop a
determined thief, but it's just the thing for quickly locking your
bike while you go into a store. We paid $12.99 for ours at a local
bike shop. Well worth it for the peace of mind.
|
 | August
7, 2005--Word has been out for a little while, but here's the
latest scoop on Campagnolo's upcoming 2006 lineup:
--As we have reported here previously (back in June), the Record and
Chorus compact cranks (offered only in carbon) will be joined by
alloy versions for the Centaur, Veloce, and Mirage lineups. This is
a real boon for riders (like us) who either wanted an alloy version
and/or didn't want to fork over the big $$$ for the carbon cranks.
--A new Eurus wheelset will be offered, using different front
and rear rims to keep overall weight to 1510 grams a pair. G3
spoking on the rear, radial on the front. Campy Only is getting away
from "boutique" wheels, but the Eurus has been a very
popular wheelset, and the new lighter model will be welcomed by many
riders
--Also look for a new, lighter Record chain in an
"ultra-narrow" width ... and with hollow pins!
Campy Only's take on the new stuff? We love the fact that an
alloy compact crankset is available--this has been an inexplicable
hole in the line-up that we're glad to see plugged. The new Eurus
wheels are nice, but as we said, we're sticking with regular wheels
that you can fix in East Nowhere if you lose a spoke. We don't use
10-speed due to the narrow chains, so an even narrower chain is not
of much use to us. Overall, with the exception of the compact
cranks, we give 2006 a big yawn. For more info, see Cycling
News' report, at http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/?id=2005/news/07-28

 | June 22, 2005--We're
hearing rumors floating around Vicenza that Campagnolo will unveil a
12-speed Record gruppo for 2006. No details yet
on how they would fit two more cogs on the hub. More details
as we get them ... |
 | June 20, 2005--In the
"it's about time" category comes a report that Campagnolo
will offer clamp-on adaptors for derailleurs to fit 32 and 35mm seat
tubes--with a Campy logo. Look for them in shops with the rest
of the '06 lineup around early Fall. |

17, 2005--Sachs Seeks Sponsors!--You've lusted after the
bikes--here is your chance to be a sponsor:
Bid
Now to be a Sachs Sponsor! |
 | June 15, 2005--Looking
forward to the rollout of the 2006 line, here's what we're
hearing will be added to Campagnolo's product lineup for next year:
>>Carbon brakes for the Record gruppo. Well,
alloy wrapped in carbon, but it's part of Campagnolo's
ongoing efforts (which we have reported on in the past) to produce
an all-carbon gruppo that will also include ...
>>Carbon hubs for the Record gruppo. Alloy hubs
will also still be available.
>>An alloy compact crankset in the Veloce gruppo.
Not as good as the Record version we've been hoping for, but a great
alternative for anyone who wants a compact crankset and either
doesn't want to fork over the price of a carbon version or just
prefers the look of alloy.
Campagnolo's is feeling pressure from component maker FSA,
which is doing land office business with its compact cranksets
(we've been using one for about a year now--read our impressions here)
and from ShimaNO, which will introduce its own compact
crank/derailleur next year. |

|
 | May 23, 2005--Hmmmm
... a reader points out that Campagnolo's square-taper bottom
brackets aren't being discounted like the cranksets they fit.
He suggests that Campy is taking aim at Full
Speed Ahead, which famously declared some time ago that they
would overtake Campagnolo for the second spot in component sales
(behind ShimaNO). Just what are they up to? |
 | May
22, 2005--Our
inbox has been filling with messages from Campy fans wondering
whether the spate of deep discounts from '05 Record carbon cranksets
and other gear (one online retailer is selling the Record carbon for
28% off its regular price; the compact version was 30% off) is an indication that the rumored release
of an ISIS-style bottom bracket/crankset combo is about to
happen. We'll let you know if we hear anything more ... In the

the end in sight for tapered cranks? A Campy Only

nothing ... Many observers have asked when Campagnolo will go with

1, 2005--A flat bar controls sighting from a C-O readerin the
UK: "I saw my first FlatBar Ergo equipped bike out
on the road today. I was stopped by the side of the road and this
guy rides up to me and asks me whether I know why he can't get the
chain on to the big ring. I put it down to the limiting screw on his
front mech and we soon got chatting about his new Centaur FB levers.
He had had them put on by his LBS recently as he found drop bars
uncomfortable. He didn't sound overly knowledgable about Campag or
bikes in general despite having a triple Record/Chorus set up.....he
didn't know whether Centaur was bottom or top of the range....though
he was at least wise enough to know my Deltas looked good....and
that my Colnago might be Italian!!!"
|
 | January 14, 2005--Reader
John offers these predictions for Campy gruppos of the future:
After electronic shifting comes electronic gear selection, one selects
the next ratio or percentage change desired and the front , rear or both derailleurs move to make the change requested.
The Campagnolo Carbon front end, integration of the front fork, brake,
headset, bars & stem into one combined assembly, meeting the need for
less weight and ease of production for the frame manufacturers.
The road disc brake, drawing on previous design experience with cable
and hydraulic disc calipers for the motorcycle industry Campagnolo translates this into a superior all weather brake system first shown in
the winter classics. |
