8 speed and 8 speed

8 speed and 8 speed

So what differs between these two.
The sprocket pitch on the 8 is 5mm and 4.5 on the 9.
So are the ergo levers the same apart from one more notch on the 9 and the difference is achieved by different rear derailleur movement per click?

more to it than that. see "spacing" here

nine speed RD/lever issues made complicated by the fact that there were early & late versions.

what you trying to ask?

I bought some pointy top Athena 9 speed ergo levers as new and set them up on my 8 speed pre exa drive rear wheel. They seem to work quite well. I thought I might have to buy the 8 speed ratchet to make them work, but seems not.
I have not used them extensively as I am waiting for a new pair of wheel cones for the front wheel

I'd read that the exa drive cogs work better with the ergo levers.

my look at the parts catalogs shows pointy Athena 9 speed in 1998 only. and that in '99 the ratchet part # changes.

looks like the cable pull is working close enough with your RD.

without any personal experience, I can't say too much more.
