Freehub question

Hi fellas, i have a question and i hope someone on this forum can help. i have just bought a pair of 2009 shamal wheelset from a guy who has installed a ShimaNO compatible freehub (i believe it's the 7850 titanium Dura Ace one) but i'm not sure. BUT, i want to change it back to a Campy one and preferably use back the old one from my current wheelset. trouble is i'm not sure if it's compatible. i just dismantled the freehub from my current wheelset but it only has one level of pawl (meaning a set of 3 with springs) and i think the 2009 shamal's freehub has 2 levels of pawl (meaning 2 sets of 3 pawls). will i be able to fix my old wheel set's freehub to the shamal?

they look similar, and all have 3 pawls, but..........

so, the answer is the Shamal FH is definitely the same as other current freehubs, but I don't know if an older one will work. You probably just have to try it and see.

ok, i get it. there are only 3 pawls it's only that the shamal one looks different. they're thicker. trouble is my current wheel's hub is not even a campy one, it is a handbuilt one using campy freehub. not sure what hub it is either, it has got a carbon fiber body and it looks like below, but i've got a picture of the front hub will try and post the rear hub later. the front has got 24 bladed spokes and the rear has got 28 spokes, 14 double butted 3 cross on the drive side and 14 triple butted 2 cross on the non-drive side.

Quick advice please. was wondering which is the way to go, i think either way i'd have to spend more money.
i) shall i keep the titanium freehub that's on the shamal and buy a cassette that'd fit the ShimaNO spline but user friendly with campy shifters? ie like american classic, mavic or wheels manufacturing (these guys rework on ShimaNO ultegra/dura ace cassettes to fit campy shifters but don't know how they perform) cassettes?? will the shifting be affected???
ii) or change the freehub back to original campy ones and use back my old cassette. trouble is i would have to change the cassette anyways coz i've got new chain and crankset.

ok, another quick question. just been to the LBS and wrencher guy there told me that i don't have to fuss about the shamal wheelset at all. just buy a ShimaNO 10 speed cassette and put it on and it should work fine with the campy 10 speed shifters and rear derailleur. is this true? he said the spacing of the cassettes are the same and they are compatible. hmmm......
advice please.

If you have to buy a new cassette anyway, I'd go with an AC conversion cassette. I found mine to work well & be v durable.

Since this is a campy forum, purists (which I am not) will shudder at the idea of using a ShimaNO cassette. your mechanic is wrong. campy 10 spd spacing is 4.12mm, ShimaNO is 3.95mm. if indexing was correct in the middle, then you'd be 0.7mm off at either end.

on other forums, heretics have written that this works OK, so you could always try and see what you think. it may just depend on how sensitive you are to good shifting.

Other conversion options are:

1. Having Wheels Manufacturing machine a 9-speed (nine, not a typo - they add an 11 to the end of a cassette starting with a 12) Ultegra or Dura Ace cassette into an "Accelerator 10" conversion for $50 + shipping. Note that you'll end up with an 11 starting cog, with the options being 11-21, 11-23, 11-25, and 11-27. Also note that the conversion can only be performed on cassettes with the largest cog on an aluminum carrier, since they machine a recess in the non-drive side of that to get the wider Campagnolo spacing on a narrower ShimaNO free hub (this is what gets in the way of converting a ShimaNO cassette which starts with a 13 cog because ShimaNO makes those by using a loose cog big cog).

2. Buying an IRD conversion cassette. 12-23, 12-25, and 12-28 flavors are available.

3. Buying a Marchisio conversion cassette.

(I looked at this mess when considering running an original Powertap hub)

OK, i've decided all this is too complicated. i'm going to remove the ShimaNO freehub off the shamal and put back the campy freehub. trouble is i'm not sure which one is correct, is it the ED10? like this one from jejames cycles?

Sounds right for a post-2006 Record derived hub.

That plus $40 Veloce cassettes imported from the UK will be cheaper than the conversion cassettes
