Help a new guy with stem question

Postby victoryon2feet » Sun Oct 10, 2010 1:50 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this Campy stuff, so I would appreciate some help. Recently got my hands on a Colnago Tecnos from the early 90s. The ITM stem she's got on is cracked, so I need a new one. My question is related to stem thickness - a local bike shop guy told me its 21.8 thick, but I can't seem to find any stems of that thickness anywhere (ebay, etc.) as if they didn't exist. Do they come in this thickness? Does that seem right? Here are some photos (not sure how much these will help):

A friend has an ITM Goccia (same as in link below) - would that work here?

Thank you!

I just measured 4 "1 inch" stems on 4 different bikes i have and found them in the 21.8 - 22.6mm range. I've never paid this any attention before, and never noticed a problem. This is not a Campy issue. The headset only relates to the OD of the steerer, whereas the stem relates to the ID. I'm not a vintage expert, but have never heard of this coming up before. Does your LBS have a pile of old stems they can try to see if there is some tolerance issue with your steerer?

Looking at some colnago pics, I don't see anything unusual in stems being used. just get a cinelli of your choosing.

Excellent, thanks for the help! Does it have to be a Cinelli? I will have to try some on.
