changing to compact crank?

Postby tanghy » Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:51 pm

I'm currently running a 8 speed Record group with a square BB and would really want to convert to a compact crankset.
Should I go with UT & outboard BB or get a used square crankset from eBay?
Which would work better?

TIA

As far one working better as a 10sp crankset with an 8 spd drivetrain, I doubt there is any difference. However! As far as raw performance UT is WAY better, in my opinion. Go UT, you won't regret it.

as someone who regularly checks ebay, i'm seeing a lot less square compact cranksets available lately. if you find one you'll have to check your BB compatibility as Centaur & below need a 111mm BB. i'm personally running an '06 centaur compact setup on my '95 Merckx Ti with no problems for several years, and i'm 6' 2" 190 lbs. potentially you might need to change the chain to a 10 speed, and shifting will probably improve. otherwise there is a lot more availability of the current cranksets, just more money & different tools to install.
