Piece it out or...?

Campagnolo in the pre-index days, from Gran Sport to C-Record

If you could possibly do it, I would encourage you to keep that '72 Pro intact, enjoy it and ride it, with one modification to make it easy for you to keep balance: put on a pair of bar-end shifters(of any make) which will allow you to enjoy those gorgeous NR derailleurs without having to let go of your handlebars. Suntour index-able bar-end shifters from the late-1980's-early '90's will work reasonably well with any NR rear derailleur and a six-speed freewheel, and of course they work flawlessly in friction mode. The old Campy bar-ends of the era will work, but they crimp the cables to the point where you need to replace them if you try to take them out of the shifters. These old bar-ends also need to be tightened frequently as well, as the screw which holds the actual lever works loose during use. I tried the old Campy bar-cons on my '72 Windsor Pro just to be "all Campy", but I quickly took them off due to the aforementioned problems... Pete
