Campy Chorus BB Tightness?

Postby Guest » Fri Feb 24, 2006 9:32 pm

Hi -

When installing a new Chorus BB in my Litespeed, I noticed when I did went to tighten up the non-drive side, there was noticeably more friction than when the BB was not in the frame. Frame has English threading. I'm worried about premature wear on the bearings.

Do I need to snug up the non-drive side tight or set it up so there is no play? I've read about the smoothness of Campy BBs, so I am checking before I tighten everything up.

So, set it "tight enough" or torque it down?

Thanks

Check to see if the seals in the cups are installed correctly. If one or both of them are reversed, it will cause excessive drag.

My new Record BB fitted onto my steel BILLATO has become noisy!
I have done around 4000km - in only good weather conditions.
A "clicking" sound matching the pedal freq... uuuurhh
No noticeable vibrations and only hearable when I'm pedalling "medium hard". When going light or very hard (out of sadle) I can't hear a thing.
Other Campy-riders says, that if the BB is not perfectly aligned the bearings will break - but after a shorter period, I guess?.
I fitted the BB my self and everything went so smoth. The frame was perfectly milled from the factory. The axel rotated nicely.
Anyway - We did not tighten it with the recommended 70nM - but only as hard as we thought wisely. 70nM is a lot!
Would a re-tightening do - or are the bearing gone?
Any experience (I'm sure :) ?

PS: I have a spare Chorus BB which I'm fitting together with a brand new Chorus CT 50/34
- Next week I'm heading for Passo Gavia in northern Italy to watch Ivan Basso take the Giro victory 8)

Thank's Campyfan,

I've just spent a few pleasent hours taking out the Record BB and fitting a new Chorus CT crank, front mech. and a spare Chorus BB i had.
This should make me prepared for my trip next week to slopes of Stelvio and Mortirolo, Italy (hopefully the 34/25 will do my legs good!)

Doing so I found that the left cup on the "clicking" BB was pretty loose and - as you mention - the grease was more or less redused too a mesh of dirt and tinny metalparts from the milling of the frame (I guess).

When taken out the Record BB runs smoothly in the hand, and i think I will refit it with the std. Record cranks when I'm back from the holiday trip - and torque it properly...
I will asume then, that the noise will be history.

I'm realy looking forward to the first trip into the mountains on this new bike. http://tofte-hansen.dk/billato/pics/bil ... pyonly.JPG

[quote="Lucky you to be going to Italy to do the Stelvio and Mortirolo, i wish i could go this year too, but i'll have to pass with a pile of work coming my way all the time.
Maybe next year i'll be able to make the trip to Europe, but for this summer all i will be able to do is take my travel bike to the Rocky mountains and enjoy the hills,,,, i mean scenery.[/quote]

Hi Campyfan - thank's for the answers
(I know this next is out of topic, but anyways...)
Now I'm back from a terrific trip to Italy and I can really recommend staying in Bormio - central for the classic climb: Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo.
Did the classic Mortirolo-climb with my new Chorus compact crank and smallest gear ratio @ 34/25 and no problems - hard though: much time out of sadle!

Go there - if you can!
There was many Americans in the area - also watching the Giro i guess
I can recommend this place: http://www.casasablonera.it
Miriam is very sweet, speaks fluently english and has a nice, locked up room for the bikes.

Cordiali Saluti!
