limit screw

Postby Guest » Sat Feb 18, 2006 7:37 pm

O.k. here is my problem. My chorus 10spd Rear der has trouble and "chatters" in the higher gears, mostly 39x11/12 or 12/13 depending on the cassette. Otherwise it is fine. Not a problem, or less of a problem with 53x11 or 12.

Upon inspection, the High limit screw is dialed in as far as it will go. The pulley is just to the outside of the outer gear. Not inline with the cog on the cassette. I can't move it in any further obviously. So for those of you that are going to say "Use the book" I basically can't get past step one. BTW, regardless of whether the cable is attached or not this is this is still the case.

This limit screw shoudl move the top jockey close to the 2nd gear in, correct? This isn't happening.

I have a short reach rear Chorus 10 spd mech, and a 10 spd Record chain. The entire system is brand new, and hasn't been ridden more than 500 miles. As I said, I have tried a 11-23 and 12-25 cassette, on two different wheelsets (Kysrium vs. Euros).

New frame too, we check the alignment of the derailleur hanger too.

I checked the torque on the cassette, on a kysrium wheel, and have also tried a Euros wheel which was a little better.

Please help, my LBS is lost as well. Defective mech? Thanks. Josh

Appologies for stating the obvious, but the limit screw isn't normally screwed all the way in.
If you back it off, it should bring the jocky wheels in line with the top sprocket, assuming the cable will allow it!
I'm surprised your LBS can't sort this, whatever the problem maybe.

I don't know where you live, but if you live anywhere near Lancashire in the UK, I would gladly take a look at it for you. PM me if that's any use to you.

I had an aluminum bike that had thick dropouts and der. hanger. The limit screw on my Record der. did "bottom out" as well. The screw isn't actually bottoming out, whats happening is the coil spring around the screw has fully compressed and will not allow the screw to turn in any farther. The remedy is to completely pull out the adj. screw and coil spring, then snip about a 1/3 to a 1/2 of the spring off. This will allow your adj. screw to turn in farther than before.

This is EXACTLY the problem! I am riding a Specialized Beer Can, and you described my problem to a T. I took the spring out all together just to see if I could mis-align the der. inward, past the sprocket, and I was able to. Something I could not do with the spring in. Amazing how much more that screw turns in without the spring in there.

I will try and snip a turn off the spring until I can get the adjustment made right.

THANKS A MILLION. It sucks posting for the first time on a site and feeling like an idiot!

It realy is anoying if ones new Campy isn't running smothly.

But I would never use these gear combinations though... :?
Using the small ring in front and the smallest sprockets
will result in "crossed" chainline where the chain might
possibly touch both the large chain ring and the front mech.
Shift up to 53/14 - and enjoy that - if necessarry
- you can shift down both front and rear without messing the chain.
That is often not the case on the S-word drive train!
