chainring bolt question

Postby Voyager [Bot] » Thu Nov 18, 2004 8:23 am

Hi folks,

I thought I read somewhere that a company (maybe Truvativ?) makes a chainring bolt which, instead of having that dumb flat slot on the backside, has a hole for a hex key. So you could use a 5mm on the front side to tighten/loosen and another hex key the back side to keep it still. Anyone have any more info on this, and where I could find such things, specifically for a Record 9sp cankset? I am trying to cure an annoying tick in my crankset and I am wondering if the ability to torque the chainring bolts down a little more (but yes I know - not too much) might help.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Annoying crankset 'ticks' can be so hard to trace sometimes, but they usually originate from where two aluminum contact surfaces are either dry or under torqued. Its possible that the chainrings may need some grease in the contact areas where they press against the spider arms, and some grease on and around the chainring bolts is a good idea as well.
If you do this it will help to remove any sounds that could originate in this area, but also dont forget the areas of the pedal threads and some liberal use of grease in the BB outer cups where the bearing races sit as well.
If you have not done this already, use a little teflon tape on the BB threads (at least two complete wraps of tape per side is usually enough)along with grease, since aluminum cups in an aluminum shell is a receipe for noise as well. Also adhere to all the torque values for the BB and related parts, and remember to check its torque setting at least every 2 or 3 thousand miles of riding to make sure its staying properly tightened.
