Record Skewer without knurling on wheel nuts

Postby rowe8941 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 5:39 am

Hi ... I purchased two Record front hub skewers as NOS on e-bay recently. When they turned up I noticed that the nuts did not have the usual 'knurling' on the fork side of the nuts (to hold the skewer onto the forks). ie the nuts are smooth on the inside. The seller advised that this was normal and not a defect however to me this seems like a defect and that the skewers may be seconds where the knurling step was missed. Does anyone have any view on whether this is a defect or whethrr this is how they were intended to be. Thanks

Picture would help. plus you don't say what year these are supposed to be - ie pre or post 2007. the spares catalog appears to show a change with 2007 & later.

The skewers are alloy and of the era 2000 - 2006. I took the skewers to the Australian Campagnolo distributor and they advised that this was definitely a manufacturing error. They actually offered to replace them but then advised that they thought they were no longer available. I doubt there was any need for a customer recall because any wheel builder would notice this and send these back. What I suspect has occurred is that Campagnolo have sold their old stock (including seconds) and they have made their way onto e-Bay. Also if you look at all the catalogues (I checked 2004-2006) they clearly show knurling on the skewer nuts. My advice would be to ask before you buy on e-bay at present. I would not risk using these skewers and the e-Bay seller is not wanting to accept these back so it looks like I get defective skewers and he gets a negative rating. Alister

Ok so I did get to the bottom of this ... the knurling in quick release nuts and on the hub nuts was introduced around 2003. So the ones I had were not 2006 model as advertised but 2002 or earlier. Regards

Interesting that Cycling Projects didn't tell you that first up...
