36 tooth Chainring, Max cog for Comp Triple Derailleur

Postby pdxraoul » Sat Aug 04, 2012 10:08 am

I see that Campy has brought out a 'super-compact crankset. Will that 36 tooth inner chanring fit on my 06-ish Chorus crankset? No? I thought not..but I'm hoping. And a second question: the comp triple derailleur is rated for a 29 tooth max cog. Really1 It won't work with a larger cog than that? I was hoping to get my lower geaers and not change my crankset by using the triple deraailleur and an 11-32 cassette.

first question.

The new 52/36 crankset is using the current 110mm compact design. So the answer is no.

second.

there is a common misconception throughout the interwebs that the RD cage length is something to do with maximum cog size. Wrong.

The upper pulley distance from the cogs, which determines how big the biggest cog can be, is the SAME on all RD's. The cage length is there to take up total chain wrap.

Thanks, Julio. I get it about cage length vs cog size. Next question: if Campy does not make a derailleur that can handle a cog larger than 29 teeth, what is a Campy person who wants to run larger cogs to do? I'm using a medium cage Chorus derailleur on a 13-29 cassette, which shifts very poorly onto the 29t cog, anmd then runs noisy. IRD makes a Campy compatible 11-30 cassette but it appears that there is no derailleur to go with it.

I have a Chorus Triple 53/42/30 and a Centaur 13-29 10sp cassette, and I run a Chorus medium cage rear mech. All works beautifully. Capacity of my system is (29-13)+(53-30) = 39.

I will be buying the new 2013 Centaur cassette with 12-30 as soon as I can hold of one, and with experimentation, I am confident that all will be well. Capacity of that system will be (30-12)+(53-30) = 41 and I reckon that would be the max capacity that my medium cage will take. If I wanted to fit a wider cassette, I'd need a long cage.

The max tooth size that Campagnolo can handle at the rear is possibly 32t, but having not tried it, I cannot be sure.

Hope that helps.

Mick.

Given that Compact Centaur UT cranksets are $127 at Total, and with another $20 for the cups, I think OP is better off biting the bullet and going compact 50:34. Gets you the gearing you need without changing either cassette or RD.

34 on existing 29 would be the same gearing as 39 on 33 and a very low gear BTW.

To get even a marginally larger sprocket means going to 2012 RD, Shifters and Cassette - not cost effective.

I'd be very interested to hear the results of running those bigger cogs: 30t and 32t. As I said before, my Chorus mid cage Der. does a lousy job on that 29. Is it possible that my problems running are a chain issue? I'm using a wipperman 10 speed chain.

Also, I'm going to a compact Veloce aluminum crank, 12-28 IRD cassette, KFS bottom bracket and keeping my current derailleurs. Got it all on ebay, just waiting for the IRD chain to arrive. We'll see how it goes.
