1995 or 1996 Athena/Veloce 8speed Ergo, new 10 speed deraill

For riders who still use 8-speed systems

I am pretty sure this would not work. because 8 speed ergo and 10 speed ergo has different pull ratios and the derailleurs aren't interchangeable. This is partly the reason you see 8 speed derailleurs going for such high price on ebay.

A 9 speed derailleur (either generation) will work.

It works best if you run a 9 speed chain and then hopefully your cassette is not too worn so the new chain wont skip.

I worked for the nations # 1 Campagnolo distributor for 9 years and we sold the new gen. 9 2001+ der. as a replacement for 8 speed derailleurs all the time and never got a complaint from dealers.

It was even listed in the catalog an acceptable replacement.
