Postby Guest » Sat Dec 16, 2006 5:21 pm

so...i'm looking for a set of these....

in some way or another....they are labeled for used with 8 and 9 speed drivetrains....how that's possible with the same indexgear/ratchet....seems odd.....

but i keep finding this older shape (which i do NOT want)....

so my questions are......

1. are the shifters in the first pics able to be used with 8 AND 9 speed drivetrains without having to change anything out?

2. what model of ergo 9 speed do i need to look for, so that i can convert it to 8 speed using part # EC-RE060 ?

I can answer # 2 for sure: The 8 speed index gear, EC-RE060, will fit any 9 speed Ergopower from 1999 to 2006 except the Xenon shifters.
For 2007, this index gear will only fit Record and Chorus, since starting in 07, Campy changed all of the shifters (Centaur and below) to the older Xenon style internals.

You can also convert a 10 speed to 8, but if you do, then Campy reccomends you also change the small index gear in the front of the shifter (ratchet ring)

et al....well...it seems my plan to find a set of older 9 speed ergo shifters with metal levers for the purpose of converting them to 8 speed is not going so well.....

i bid on a set of chorus 9 speed ergo shifters but while they are in good condition on the outside....they need a new set of g-springs, possibly a new index gear and possibly a new spring that sits behind the index gear. they don't have that crisp shift that i'm used to.....they could also use a new set of hoods as well as a REALLY good cleaning.....oh well.....

i wasn't really looking to do all of that....

all i wanted to do is find a near new or very low miles ergo shifter set (the new rounded style) and just replace the index gear to convert them to 8 speed.....
