10 speed chain on 11 speed drive train

Postby fozzy » Wed Feb 03, 2010 3:16 pm

Hi,

as the difference between Campa's 11-speed cassette spacing (3,85mm) and the ShimaNO/Sram 10-speed cassette spacing (3,95mm) is only 0,1mm I am wondering if a 10-speed chain could be used on an 11-speed drivetrain.
Dura Ace chain = 5.88 mm width.

Campagnolo 11 speed cogs are 1,6mm thick

(2x3.85)-1,6=6.1 thus there a free space of 0.22 mm

Did anuone already tryed it?

changing my answer. since the Campy 10 spd chain was originally 6.2mm (I think) and changed to the ShimaNO standard 5.9mm. it would seem that there is some latitude generally - although my experience has been that the narrower chain runs quieter and shifts better.

10sp chain may not work on 11sp cassette, but I know a 9sp chain will work on a 10sp cassette.
Surely it's the same argument?
Has anyone actually physically tried the 10sp chain? I would have put money on the fact that the 9sp chain wouldn't work on 10sp, but I'd have lost the bet!

a SRAM 8speed chain (pc-48/58/830/850; width=6,9mm or about 0,2 mm thinner than other brands) works fine on a Campagnolo 9 speed cassette.

As reported in the campagnolo technical manual, the width chain for 10sp is 5,9mm vs 5,5mm of 11sp and it doesn't work properly (noise). Campagnolo says that there isn't any compatibility between 10 sp and 11 speed. Surely this is the reason. I don't get the reason for this misuse instead of riding appreciating a good drive train.

the campagnolo people will not like this, but it seems the dure ace 10 speed chain can be used on the Campa 11 speed drive train. I have been told that at least one professional racing team in the continental circuit is doing so!

Has anyone experimented with this anymore? I run Wipperman chains (10-speed) and would like to continue using these if possible on my Chorus 11 drivetrain.
Thanks in advance!

Dying to hear the answer to this one, although I don't have any complaints about the Record 11s chain except for the joining pin palava. KMC links are so much easier to use.
