Front Derailleur Will Not Stay In Position

Postby jberenyi » Wed Dec 02, 2009 9:30 pm

My friend's new bike has the Chorus 11-speed and I have tuned it the best I can but when you shift up to the large chain ring and ride for a little while it has an affinity to want to click down once towards the smaller chain ring. When the front derailleur is in the most outward position I can push slightly on the cage and it will drop down one click easily. My personal bikes, both equipped with Campy 10-speeds will not do this. Does he have a defective shifter? Keep in mind no matter how I tune that front derailleur with different cable tensions I can still move the cage inward easily with light finger pressure.

Hi,
I know little about 11sp, but I don't think it's much different to any of the Ergo family, it just has more teeth on the ratchets.

If the problem was on the rear mech, I'd have said the G Springs in the Ergo are worn, but I've not heard of the same problem with a front mech. I've stripped down a few right-hand Ergos, both 9sp and 10sp, so I'm well versed in their internals. The left-hand control may be exactly the same except it's a mirror image of course.

So I reckon, and it's only a guess, that the Ergo G Springs are worn.

Hopefully someone will come on here with a better idea, but this forum is VERY quiet these days.

Regards,
Mick.

my vote is for defective/damaged. I just had my first failure of a piece of Campy stuff in 5 yrs and it is a left shifter. started with your symptoms, then became reluctant to shift up to the big ring, then i played with it a little too forcefully in trying to adjust, then it failed altogether. not the oldest i have but used for a couple of years part-time.

I'll echo Bikerjulio's comments. I tuned my buddies 11 speed chorus FD and had no such issues you did. And he had over 1000 miles on his. Actually he rear ended a car and broke his Trek frame, but he says all the 11 speed stuff is perfectly fine.

Dear friend, my mechanic has solved this problem reading the Campagnolo technical bulettin: a correct front derailleur registration allows to make the action from the small to the bigger gear at the third click. Try and let me know.
