Postby Air23 » Sat Jan 22, 2011 9:19 am

Hi
I want to install my Chorus crankset and Campy recommend only Record BB cups not SR
Do you know what's the difference between Super record and Record ulta torque cups - (appart from the colour)??
i prefer the black colour but Record group hasn't it

I believe that Campy omitted the seals on the SR cups because apparently ceramic bearings are less susceptible to dirt

Sorry, can't help with that one. I've not seen seals sold separately. Or know if they are replaceable.

Absolutely no problem, the only difference is the black anodizing.

As I said - the difference is in the lack of seals on the SR.

If you don't believe me, check pages 4 & 6

ack! I have the same situation. I have 2010 Chorus 11 speed cranks. Competitive cyclist sold me the SR BB cups. There is a note in the SR BB box that says "Never use for Record Cranks".

It sounds like there is a lack of seals. I can still swap the bottom bracket for a Record BB for use with the Chorus cranks.

What was the final recommendation here? I am having a hard time deciphering what is ok based on the previous posts.

Thanks

well, the seals are on the inside, keeping any water or dirt that gets into the BB area away from the inner side of the race. so if this is a fair weather bike, I wouldn't worry too much. and don't use a hose anywhere near the area. some bikes seem prone to collecting water in the BB, so you might want to check if it does get wet after a wet ride. safer to change for regular record BB if you can.

Thanks for the info. I am dealing with an older steel frame, a REAL Schwinn Paramount from 1987. It is SLX tubing - which at this point, might need more care. I will have to inspect. I think the Record cups are the way to go.

The seals are on the bearings.

yes- the regular bearings have a seal - so do the record cups. as i said, if it's a fair weather bike, then no problem with using SR cups.

if you ride in the rain and the bike has a tendency to collect water in the BB shell, then the regular cups with their seal would seem to be a good idea.

they removed seals to save weight and are not needed under most conditions
