Shifter Position

Postby Nottyfruit » Fri Sep 24, 2010 1:05 am

hi guys,
i removed the shifters to change my handlebars last nite. now i'm kinda at a lost on where to position the shifters. any guidelines to follow? i've replaced my old rounded handlebar with an anatomical flattish top and sides. is it usually placed by feel? whereby for everyone it's different. i also find it hard to place it at the top of the curves around to start of the drop where i find it most comfortable.

any tips would be appreciated. thanks.

I like mine like this on these Ritchey WCS bars. Flat transition to bar top, tilted slightly off vertical.

I think I have my levers a little too high. The bottom of the blade is about 4-5mm up from the bottom of the bar, and I think it'd be more comfortable if they were level and I tilted the bar upwards (slightly). It's surprisingly tough to find good profile pics of ErgoPower levers mounted on various handlebars.

It's really down to personal preference. Campy instructions say have the levers vertical. But have you ever seen a picture of Tom Boonen's setup? Way up there.

Here's a another setup of mine on "traditional" bend bars.

I see what you mean about Boonen's bike.

According to the instructions Tom's inviting "personal injury or death".

I know I have made numerous adjustments to my shifter placement. I swear I must be related to Eddy Merckx or I have OCD or something like that.
Here is my most recent setup. I agree with the fact that it really is personal preference as to where they are placed, however I also assume that there is some credence in Campagnolo expressing that it must go in a particular range on the bar.

I believe that Campagnolo state the position so you don't have them set "wrongly".

If you are not careful, it may be possible to set them so your brake levers don't have enough clearance to pull hard for an emergency stop. I reckon it's best to check. It's all very well being comfortable, but what happens if there's not enough clearance if your cables just happen not to be adjusted correctly?

Mr Campag is stating his case "just in case" and clearing his back if there's a law suit coming his way.

Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to everybody!

Mick.
