9s chainwhip on 10s cassette?

Postby Guest » Sat Nov 13, 2004 2:22 am

I am assuming that if the largest sprocket is big enough so that the tool does not interfere with the next smaller one, using it this way would work.

You can use your 9s whip on a 10s cassette with little or no problem. For some extra clearance you can put the whip on the largest or smallest cog for the added clearance on the open side as well. One final tip is this, you can use your old 10s chain and cut out pieces so you can replace the chain fitted on both parts of the whip. If your whip is too wide for the 10s chain to fit over it, reuse the old links that are fitted on the whip arm only and put the 10s chain onto the remainder section. :)

Interestingly, Campa'a newest FAQs (Q&As?) specifically designate this activity as a no-no.

Chain whips

I am using a chain whip that has to be 10 years old at least. I use this for every and any cassette I need to remove. I have never had a fit problem with any campy, ShimaNO, or whatever. True, the width of chains have changed, but link length has not.
