Would ShimaNO DuraAce cables work on Centaur groupset?

Postby mJtIII » Sun Oct 10, 2010 4:27 am

Greetings.

I ride w/ a Centaur groupset.

I recently had my ride serviced by a local cyclery. I picked it up w/ DuraAce cables instead of Campag. The bike mechanic insists that cables are cables and charged me accordingly. I have ridden the bike and it seems OK although I am not 100% convinced and yet I would like to give him the benefit of doubt...

Q. Are cables interchangeable between different ShimaNO and Campag? Could there be long-time damage caused by having DuraAce cables on my Centaur groupset?

Cheers.

The short answer is no, they are not interchangeable. The ends on the campy cable are smaller, and it's important that they fit properly into the levers or else bad things can happen. Your shop may have had to file the ends to get them to fit. There isn't much clearance between the shifter mech and housing so an oversize shifter cable end can touch it leading to bad shifting.

Here's a bit about the brake cables:

Other threads talk about ShimaNO cable ends getting stuck in the levers, so when the time comes to replace these you may need expert assistance.

put some graphite in end so that they don't seize. They'll work their way out when change time comes.
