May 19, 2007--The 38th edition of the Davis Double was one of the most unusual in memory. A fire burning near the outbound portion of the course forced the organizers to make a radical change, sending the riders out on the second half of the route backwards and turning the traditional loop course into an out-and-back. That seemingly simple change rippled through the ride--rest stops had to be moved, course markings changed, etc. Despite the adversity, The Davis Bike Club rose to the challenge and had their usual stellar support fully in place.

The "new" course meant that, for the first time, we got to climb the long downhill sections that we traditionally ride down after lunch on the way out, then climb the usual uphills on the way back. In all, there were about 10,000 feet of elevation gain, including the long, steep climb up Cobb Mountain. Here's the elevation profile:
