Big Fix: Day One Photo

June 17, 2006--Day One of the Big Fix dawned bright and ... warm. Our 90-mile ride to Pollock Pines would turn out to be more eventful than we thought. After a great send-off by friends, family, well-wishers, and members of the Davis Bike Club, we headed east. We had scarcely left Davis when our first problem surfaced: Where was Jill? The only female member of the Big Fix peloton was lost, less than an hour after we started. This was the beginning of a pattern that was to mark Jill's riding, but it was only one of the day's issues. The heat of the day, the confusing roads in the Sierra foothills, and everyone's day one jitters and inexperience all took their toll. By day's end, Jill would be lost (again), Ike would get lost, and several riders would be hit hard by the heat. We were all glad to get to the hotel at the end of the ride (although several riders actually rode past it--uphill--without stopping).
